Small company stocks have had excess returns relative to large company stocks and value company stocks have had excess returns relative to growth company stocks. Because of this, if monkeys throwing darts to determine portfolio composition, would likely outperform an index portfolio! That is because indices normally utilize a market weighting approach whereas the data supports that other factors are available that can be leveraged in portfolio construction.
