Monday Morning Motivation – Respect

Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially
Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day.
Hopefully the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week. Please feel free to forward the newsletter on to others that you think would benefit from the content.
Respect
Two weeks, I wrote about humility. In that post, I highlighted 5 keys concepts to focus on as we grow in our understanding and experience of humility: dependence, respect, supernatural, virtue, and living. Over the next several weeks, I’ll offer some thoughts on each of these key traits. Hopefully, this series will be at least somewhat helpful to us as we journey forward into each week!
One of the most powerful songs you will ever hear is Aretha Franklin's "Respect." While a lot of folks, probably remember her spelling out R-E-S-P-E-C-T, most folks do not realize that at the time it was a political statement about the rights of women.
Unfortunately, many buy into the mistaken (in my opinion) premise that “respect is earned and not given.” In my mind, you show your strength as a person when you FIRST give respect. In so doing, you both display your humility and extend to others what is a HUGE common courtesy. Now mind you, while I believe that respect needs to be given FIRST, I also believe that it can be taken back if it is mistreated.
That is why respect is such a key component of humility. Humility requires extending yourself to others. BUT, it does NOT demand that you are walked on by others.
That brings us to this week’s question:
- Do you have the courage and humility to extend respect to others first?
Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning.
Have a great week!
Curt
(NOTE – Count on seeing the next three aspects in the next three weeks of MMM.)
