Monday Morning Motivation – Why
Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially
Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day.
Hopefully the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week. Please feel free to forward the newsletter on to others that you think would benefit from the content.
Why
First, a disclaimer, today’s a bit of a “bait and switch.” While the title is “why,” the real question that I want to challenge you with is “how.”
I recently read a blog post that I could not get my mind off of, and I had to go back to it again and again. For those of you interested in it, you can read it here. The post was from Laura Story who has sung one of the most amazing songs that you will ever hear—a song that is priceless when you are going through struggles.
If you have spent any time around little ones, you know that the endless chorus of whys is enough to drive you crazy. However, I always smile when I hear them ask, as I know that they are seeking knowledge. However, as we age, often the refrain of “why” changes from a search for reasons to an indictment of others and an expression of disdain for our situation:
- Why did he/she do that?
- Why do I have to put up with this?
- Why is it always me?
Whys move from an amazing quest for knowledge to a sad self-pity party. And, yes, I have held more than one such pity party for myself.
But “how” allows us to turn situations around very, very quickly:
- How can I mend fences with the one who hurt me or the one I hurt?
- How can I take this miserable situation and turn it into something worthwhile?
- How can I teach others as I go through this challenge?
We will often NEVER know why. But we have the choice to decide on HOW we will respond to each and every situation we face. And that is a wonderful gift from God that we all (myself included) would be better served to grab hold of whenever we find ourselves drifting down the self-pity path of why.
That brings us to this week’s question:
- Would you be better off asking how versus why?
Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning.
Have a great week!
Curt
