Monday Morning Motivation – Truth

Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially
Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day. Today we discuss the concept of truth.
Hopefully the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week. Please feel free to forward the newsletter on to others that you think would benefit from the content.
Truth
Recently I had the chance within one week’s time to be in two different homes. One had MSNBC on the TV. The other had Fox News. Both stations were talking about many of the same stories. However, the portrayal of the stories was so different that I literally was shaking my head.
I’m not saying EITHER of the stations was correct in their portrayal. What I am saying is that it is very difficult for me to accept that the news as we see it presented is so colored by those who are delivering the news. It seems to me that entertainment has taken over from truth in this area of our lives.
A basic agreement on what is and is not factual
As an engineer, I really like my facts and data. Furthermore, I always try and simplify things down and, in so doing, get to the core essence of what is factual or true. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be the popular approach to things these days. That saddens me, as it is only when we find commonalities that we share that we are we able to move forward with those around us—and a basic agreement on what is and is not factual is critical in forging a foundation for dialogue.

Critically reflect on data sources
I’ve taken to challenging those around me—and challenging myself as well—to critically reflect on the data sources we are absorbing. Fortunately, my social network is full of folks who value truth, and they have embraced the challenge and have begun to dig more deeply into what is behind their views.
Fruitful discussions and deepened relationships
We don’t always agree on everything, but we are coming to some common understandings of the facts. That has led to much more fruitful discussions and deepened relationships. Both are good things in my mind.
That brings us to this week’s question:
- How do you view the concept of truth?
Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning.
Have a great week!
