Monday Morning Motivation – Resist

Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially
Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day. Today we discuss "resist."
Hopefully the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week. Please feel free to forward the newsletter on to others that you think would benefit from the content.
Resist
Most everyone is likely familiar with resistance bands—those springy cords that you can use as a substitute for weights when you work out. They’re quite interesting, in that the harder you pull against them, the harder they pull back.
This is exactly what happens when we resist things in life—the harder we struggle against things, the more difficult they become.
I am NOT for a moment suggesting that there are things in life that we should not work against. Rather, I am suggesting that the concept of resistance is rarely the most effective strategy. We all know this:
- Think about when you try and get your child to eat the one item that they abhor.
- Think about when you try and convince your spouse to do something that they have told you they do not want to do.
- Think about when you bow up against authority.
In each of the above situations, resistance is normally counter-productive. Instead, I would argue that, if it is NOT reasonable to change the situation you face, you are better served by EMBRACING versus resisting.
Most people who hear this and conclude that to do so is to, in a sense, surrender. I disagree. If the situation is immutable, resisting is foolish. Instead, accept fully (i.e., embrace) the situation and develop a strategy that best applies to the situation. Wishing the situation to not be so—If you have already decided that the situation is unchangeable—is crazy.
Here is the subtlety: as soon as you STOP resisting, you have by definition changed the dynamics of the situation. Furthermore, you have then focused your energy and efforts on what you can control and NOT on what you cannot. This is extremely easy to say and extremely difficult to do!
That brings us to this week’s question:
- What do you resist in your life?
Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning.
Have a great week!
