Anxiety


Anxiety is one of the most daunting and crippling challenges a person can face. When taken to extremes, it can have a physically debilitating effect on anyone. It’s an incredibly powerful force.

For that reason, I strive to avoid anxiety at all costs. While this is sometimes easier said than done, I've developed a few techniques over time that help me manage this unwelcome visitor when it starts to creep into my mind.

In fact, the first key is to always remember that anxiety is a feeling. It is NOT something external. It is something internal.

  • Tip 1 – Recognize anxiety for what it is— a feeling.

Once I transition from “being anxious” to “feeling anxious,” I remind myself that I have control over my feelings.

  • Tip 2 – Remember that you control how you feel.

Feelings, while powerful, are ultimately a choice. When I recognize that I’m feeling uncomfortable, I shift my focus to how I would prefer to feel.

  • Tip 3 – Visualize/imagine/focus on how you would like to feel.

Will these three tips always eliminate anxiety? No, but they provide a thought process that typically distracts me from the sources of my anxiety. By focusing on my mental strategy, I can redirect my thoughts, regaining a sense of control that often minimizes those anxious feelings.

That brings us to this week’s question:
