Monday Morning Motivation – Mercy

Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially

Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day.

Hopefully the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week.  Please feel free to forward the newsletter on to others that you think would benefit from the content.

Mercy

How many people remember the game you used to play as kids where you would interlock fingers with a friend, and then try and get your friend to get “up on their toes” by bending their wrists to the point of discomfort?

You could get out of this predicament by proclaiming “mercy, mercy” to your friend; and, assuming they were indeed a friend and not a sadist, your friend would back off, and then you would head over to the swings, slide, or merry-go-round.

Appropriately, this game was known as “Mercy.”

As is often the case, I like to see what Webster has to say on the word:

  • Compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one's power to punish or harm.

The definition definitely fits the game!

As we go through life, we have many, many situations where we encounter others who have done us wrong. In some of these situations it is easy to play judge, jury and executioner. However, doing so rarely leaves us happier or better off as individuals.

The better—and stronger—option is to extend mercy to those that have done us wrong. When we do, we metaphorically join the other person on the swings, slide, or merry-go-round. And, if memory serves me right, it’s a lot more fun to spend time on the playground.

That brings us to this week's question:

  • Is it time that you extend mercy to someone, so that you can enjoy the playground of life?

Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning

Have a great week!

Curt
