Monday Morning Motivation – Pride

Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially

Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day.

Hopefully, the message below will help you kick off the week on a positive note. Please feel free to forward the newsletter on to others that you think would benefit from the content.

Pride

I recently came across an article from an author that gave me an entirely new perspective on the topic of pride.

The article challenged me to think about pride and how I perceived it. My mind immediately went straight to the “cocky attitude” that you encounter with individuals who think they are “all that.” For me, I don’t find that a particularly attractive trait and work hard to avoid behaving in this manner. (Disclaimer—some would say I fail miserably at avoiding these behaviors!). In my mind, I associate “humility” with being the opposite of pride. (Side note: I recently took on the topic of humility in an earlier MMM.)

What came next caught me off guard. The author suggested that in many cases, individuals who think of themselves as humble/having a high degree of humility are actually prideful! After thinking about it for just a moment, it clicked.

Pride is about focusing on yourself. Humility is about focusing on others. AND, if you focus on how “wonderful” your humility is, you have “lost” the humility and drifted into the area of pride!

Does this mean that we should avoid behaving with humility? Absolutely not! What it does mean is that we continually need to be on guard in the area of pride. Even when we are doing the right things, having the wrong motives can often take us down less-than-desirable paths.

That brings us to this week’s question:

  • Have you ever considered the similarities between pride and humility?

Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning

Have a great week!

Curt
