Monday Morning Motivation – Virtue
Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially
Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day.
Hopefully the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week. Please feel free to forward the newsletter on to others that you think would benefit from the content.
Virtue
Four weeks ago, I wrote about humility. In that post, I highlighted 5 keys concepts to focus on as we grow in our understanding and experience of humility: dependence, respect, supernatural, virtue, and living. Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll continue this series of offering thoughts on each of these key traits. Hopefully, this series will be at least somewhat helpful to us as we journey forward into each week!
I’m going back to Mr. Webster again this week. Webster defines virtue as:
- Behavior showing high moral standards
Just like with “supernatural” last week,” this definition explains PERFECTLY why “virtue” goes so well with “humility.” Without a moral compass, how can one expect to relate well to others?
We all have the ability to make our own choices. And while it may not be popular in today’s culture, I do believe that there are certain moral absolutes. Does that mean that I adhere to these all the time? Nope – I screw up just as badly as the next person. But I do strive to lead a life of virtue and focus on behaving in a manner that I feel is morally “correct.”
What is particularly interesting to me is how many people will challenge this concept today. They will argue that there are no absolutes—and that, while I may believe in absolutes, it may turn out that I am wrong. Maybe. But I choose to turn things around a bit. By asserting that my concept of “absolute” cannot exist, they are claiming that their belief of “no absolutes” must be correct. It seems to me that this allegation is in itselfan absolute; which, in turn contradicts the assertion that there are no absolutes!
I would argue that maybe—just maybe—those who argue against my position could learn a bit from exploring the traits/characteristics of humility.
That brings us to this week’s question:
- Have you ever thought about virtue and what your thoughts say about your views on humility?
Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning.
Have a great week!
Curt
(NOTE – Count on seeing the final aspect in next week’s MMM.)
