Monday Morning Motivation – Preparation

Sharing Resources to Help You Grow Personally, Professionally & Financially
Sometimes it helps to get a little dose of encouragement—along with a good cup of coffee!—to start the day. Today we discuss preparation.
Hopefully the message below will help you get off to a good start for the week. Please feel free to forward the newsletter on to others that you think would benefit from the content.
Preparation
I love to fish—Bass fishing in particular. But I may love the preparation to fish even more than the actual fishing!
Every winter, I take the time to go through all of my tackle. Now that may not sound like a big deal to many, but you have to realize that I own enough tackle to put Bass Pro Shops to shame! Inventorying the baits, checking the rods, re-spooling the line, organizing the boat, cataloging the waypoints from the past year, reviewing the notes from my trips—the list goes on and on!
I freely admit that I overdo it. But it does deliver results. When I am on the water, I know where everything is. My research has my mind fully stocked with a history of what has and has not worked in the past. While I don’t always catch the fish, more days than not I am able to outperform others on the water.
IMPORTANT POINT: This is not because I’m a better fisherman—there are lots of folks that are better at actually catching the fish. It is because I spend the time preparing—because I have tilted the odds in my favor. And tipping the odds in my favor pays off more times than not.
I have used fishing to illustrate an activity where preparation is critical. I have also used it to illustrate that, even with proper preparation, success is NOT guaranteed, AND the other guy who does not prepare will sometimes catch a bigger fish than you do. We can NEVER fully control the outcome. However, we can control the preparation, which maximizes the probability that we will achieve our desired outcome.
- Preparation is critical to maximize the probability that we achieve our desired goals personally, professionally, and spiritually.
That brings us to this week’s question:
- Are you focused enough on preparation?
Thanks for sharing a bit of your time with me this Monday morning.
Have a great week!
